Seeing Transformation Where I First Saw Death

This morning, while taking Pepper outside, something unexpected caught my eye.

Empty Skins 7.22.26

The wind stirred the bark of one of our beautiful pecan trees, and I noticed what looked like hundreds of fuzzy caterpillars clinging to the trunk. From a distance, my heart sank. They appeared dead, gathered together in a way that felt both mysterious and unsettling.

Curiosity invited me closer.

As I looked more carefully, I began to notice something remarkable. Many of them were hollow. Delicate. Translucent. These weren’t lifeless caterpillars at all.

They were empty skins.

A communal molting site.

The caterpillars had gathered together, shed what no longer fit, and continued on into the next stage of their lives. What remained was simply the evidence of a transformation that had already taken place.

How often do we mistake what has been left behind for the end of the story?

Standing beneath that pecan tree, I found myself reflecting on my own life—on grief, healing, ancestry, and the quiet work of becoming. This past year has been one of descending into old stories, inherited wounds, memories, and love that continues to change form. Perhaps that is why this simple encounter landed so deeply within me.

The tree seemed to whisper:

What served this stage cannot accompany the next.

Not because it was wrong. Not because it failed. Not because it was unworthy.

Because it became too small for the life now unfolding.

There is something profoundly compassionate in that realization.

We often carry guilt for outgrowing old identities, relationships, beliefs, roles, or ways of being. We assume that leaving something behind means we must reject it.

Yet the empty skin tells a different story.

It was never the enemy.

It protected the caterpillar exactly as long as it needed to.

Then, one day, it simply became too small.

Perhaps growth asks us to honor what carried us here while gently releasing what cannot walk beside us into the next season.

The tree itself stood healthy and full of life, reaching toward the summer sky. The empty skins remained only as a quiet reminder that transformation had already happened.

Nature has a beautiful way of revealing truths that words alone often struggle to express.

🍃 What empty skin might you still be mistaking for the end, when perhaps it is simply evidence that you’ve already begun becoming something new?
