There comes a moment in every seeker’s life when a quiet question begins to rise…

Can I honor where I come from without becoming a replica of it?

Whether we’re exploring our ancestry, our faith, our culture, or the traditions that shaped our families, it’s easy to believe that honoring the past means preserving it exactly as it was.

But history tells a different story.

Our ancestors were not all the same.

They questioned. They disagreed. They adapted. They migrated. They learned from new neighbors. They carried old prayers into new landscapes. They planted familiar seeds in unfamiliar soil.

They were living people—not monuments.

The more I study history and folk traditions, the more I find myself returning to three simple questions.

🌿 Historical What did this mean to them?

Before asking whether I agree, I first want to understand. What did these words, these prayers, these customs, these rituals mean to the people who lived them? What was happening in their world? What shaped their understanding?

Understanding comes before agreement.

🤍 Symbolic What human truth is being expressed?

Beneath every tradition is often something deeply human.

A longing for protection. A prayer for healing. A desire to belong. A way to grieve. A way to celebrate. A way to remember.

While the language may differ across cultures and centuries, the heart of these longings often remains beautifully familiar.

Devotional How do I carry this forward with integrity?

This is where tradition becomes alive.

Not by copying the past.

Not by rejecting it.

But by entering into relationship with it.

Sometimes I will preserve something exactly as it was given.

Sometimes I will gently adapt it so it speaks truthfully within my own understanding.

Sometimes I will simply bow my head in gratitude for what it taught and leave it in the hands of those who carried it before me.

All three can be acts of reverence.

I no longer believe our invitation is to recreate the lives of those who came before us.

I believe our invitation is to receive history honestly, discern it thoughtfully, and carry forward what gives life.

Perhaps that is how traditions truly survive.

Not because they remain frozen in time…

But because each generation receives them with humility, tends them with love, and offers them forward with integrity.

May we honor the roots without fearing new growth.

May we remember with gratitude.

May we live with reverence.

🔔 Invitation

How has your own understanding of an inherited tradition evolved over time?

Perhaps it’s your family’s faith, your cultural heritage, a recipe passed down through generations, or a way of seeing the world that no longer fits exactly as it once did.

I’d love to hear your reflections in the comments. Not to debate what is “right,” but to explore together how we can honor those who came before us while living truthfully in the present.

I’d be honored to hear your story. 🌿✨

With devotion and wonder, 🕯️🤍
